Farther south than anything else

No mammal breeds closer to the South Pole than the Weddell seal. They live on the fast ice that welds itself to the Antarctic continent, in a place where winter air can drop below minus 40 and the sun disappears for months. While most Antarctic seals retreat north with the advancing ice, Weddell seals stay.

They are big, placid-looking animals, around ten feet long, with small heads, a permanently upturned mouth that reads as a smile, and mottled silver-grey coats. On the ice they are famously unbothered by people. Researchers can walk right up to them, largely because nothing has ever hunted a Weddell seal on top of the ice. Every danger in their world comes from below.

Teeth as ice tools

Living under solid ice creates one enormous problem: a mammal that breathes air has to keep a hole open in a lid that is constantly trying to freeze shut.

Weddell seals solve it with their teeth. They saw and ream at the ice around their breathing holes, swinging their heads side to side and grinding away with their canines and incisors to keep the opening clear all winter. It works, and it comes at a steep price. The abrasion wears their teeth down badly over the years, and worn or broken teeth eventually mean an animal cannot maintain its hole. For many Weddell seals, dental wear is what ultimately ends their lives, which makes them one of the few wild animals whose lifespan is effectively set by their tools wearing out.

They sing, and the songs go below human hearing. Weddell seals are strikingly vocal, producing trills, chirps, whistles and descending buzzes that carry for miles under the ice. Recordings have captured calls reaching down into infrasound and up into ultrasound, well outside what human ears can pick up. Divers describe the noise beneath Antarctic ice as sounding like science fiction sound effects.

An hour underwater, in the dark, under a roof

Weddell seals are extraordinary divers. Routine foraging dives run several hundred meters deep and can last well over an hour, with the deepest recorded dives reaching past 600 meters and the longest exceeding 80 minutes. Some studies have logged even more extreme numbers.

Think about what that dive actually demands. The seal is beneath a solid ceiling. It is often completely dark. It must find prey, catch it, and then navigate back to a hole in the ice perhaps a kilometer away, all before its oxygen runs out, with no possibility of surfacing anywhere in between. Getting lost is fatal.

Research published in recent years suggests they manage this partly by timing their most extreme dives strategically, pushing hardest when conditions make the effort pay off. They also appear to navigate using faint light gradients through the ice and a fine memory for the layout of their own territory.

Pups on the coldest nursery on Earth

Weddell seal mothers give birth directly onto the ice in the Antarctic spring, when temperatures are still brutally low. A newborn arrives wet into air that can be dozens of degrees below freezing, which is about as hostile a welcome as birth gets anywhere on the planet.

The pups grow fast on extremely rich milk, and mothers invest heavily, often losing a large share of their own body mass during nursing. Unusually among seals, Weddell mothers frequently take their pups into the water early, sometimes within a week or two, and appear to actively accompany them on early dives. For an animal whose survival depends on knowing where the breathing holes are, learning the neighborhood early is not optional.

A living laboratory

Because Weddell seals tolerate humans so calmly and return to predictable spots, they have become one of the most thoroughly studied wild mammals in the world. Colonies near research stations like those in McMurdo Sound have been monitored for decades, with individual animals tracked across their whole lives.

That long record is scientifically valuable far beyond seals themselves. Their diving physiology has shaped human medical understanding of oxygen deprivation, blood chemistry, and how tissue survives without fresh oxygen. And because they sit near the top of a short food chain in a fast-changing region, shifts in their numbers and body condition act as an early signal of what Antarctic sea ice and fish populations are doing.

The species overall is listed as Least Concern, with a population in the hundreds of thousands. The concern is not hunting. It is the ice itself, and how much of it is still there in fifty years.
