Orange chest, black crest, and a habit of turning up thousands of kilometres from home.
Fur seals are notoriously hard to tell apart. Nine species, most of them brown, most of them the same general shape. This one is the exception. Both sexes carry a creamy orange to yellow chest and face that stops abruptly against a chocolate brown or near black back, and adult males have a crest of black fur on top of the head that stands straight up when the animal is excited. Nothing else in the family looks remotely like it.
The snout is the second field mark. It is short and flat, not long and pointed, which separates it immediately from the Antarctic fur seal it often shares a beach with. Whiskers are long and white. Ear flaps are long and prominent. Pups are glossy black with a dark chocolate belly and moult at around three months.
Adult males run 150 to 190 cm and 90 to 160 kg, females 100 to 140 cm and 30 to 50 kg, and newborns 60 to 70 cm and 4 to 6 kg. Treat the top of the male range as a maximum rather than a typical animal: measured males at Marion Island average only about 88 kg, well under the published figures. The species breeds north of the Antarctic Polar Front on temperate islands across the southern Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, and roughly 99 percent of it breeds in just three places, with 63 percent of world pup production at Gough Island, 25 percent at the Prince Edward Islands and 11 percent at Amsterdam Island.
Tropicalis means "of the tropics", which is a strange name for an animal that breeds on cold, wind hammered islands in the far south. The name exists because when John Edward Gray described the species in 1872, the specimen in front of him had been recovered in northern Australia. He named the seal after where the body turned up rather than where the animal lived.
The mistake accidentally described something true. This species wanders further than any other fur seal. Vagrants have been recorded in Angola at 9 degrees South, on the Comoros, Madagascar and the East African coast, in Brazil, at the Juan Fernández Islands in the Pacific, and more than fifty times in Australia since the 1970s, from New South Wales to Western Australia. Most of them are young males.
The record that stands out came in March and April 2013, when a healthy subantarctic fur seal was found at the SĂŁo Pedro e SĂŁo Paulo Archipelago at 00 degrees 56 minutes North, about 1,010 km off the Brazilian mainland and on the wrong side of the equator. It was not stranded, lost or sick. It was hunting flying fish. It remains the northernmost record of any fur seal in the Atlantic Ocean.
An Antarctic fur seal nurses its pup for about 117 days. This one nurses for roughly 300, near enough ten months, and that single difference reorganises the entire life of the animal.
Pupping runs from mid November to early January and peaks in December, with births at Marion Island spread over about six weeks centred on 17 December. The female comes into oestrus within six to ten days of giving birth, mates, and then goes to sea. Her trips are long. At Amsterdam Island the attendance cycle averages 11 to 23 days away across the season and stretches to 23 to 28 days late in lactation, with only a couple of days ashore in between, and females have been tracked foraging up to 530 km from the island.
Think about what that means from the pup's side. It sits on a crowded beach, fasting, for the better part of a month at a time. Then its mother comes back, and out of thousands of animals the two of them find each other by voice and smell, and she feeds it milk that is around 39 percent fat, and then she leaves again. That cycle repeats for ten months.
The orange chest is the part people notice, but the important thing about this coat is underneath it. Like every fur seal, this animal grows its hair in bundles, one stiff waterproof guard hair with dozens of fine underfur hairs packed beneath it, all emerging through a single opening in the skin. Diving wets the outer layer and leaves a sheet of trapped air against the body. That air, rather than blubber, is what keeps the seal warm in water a few degrees above freezing. The crest that stands up on an excited male is just guard hair doing what hair does, and it works as a signal precisely because the coat is so dense.
The small external ear flaps behind the eyes are why this family is called the eared seals. In the water the long fore flippers do the work, beating like wings while the body trails behind, and the short broad hind flippers steer. On land those hind flippers rotate forward under the body, so the animal walks on all four limbs and can climb the boulder fields and ledges that its breeding islands are made of. A true seal, faced with the same rocks, would be stuck.
Those field marks matter more here than almost anywhere else, because at Marion Island the largest breeding populations of the subantarctic and Antarctic fur seals sit on the same beaches. At Marion, Macquarie and Crozet the two species hybridise. Macquarie is stranger still: all three fur seal species there, subantarctic, Antarctic and New Zealand, interbreed, and pups cannot be reliably assigned to a species by appearance at all. Researchers have to use genetics.
This is an opportunistic hunter working the ocean fronts, feeding on lanternfish and squid with a few crustaceans, plus penguins at Amsterdam Island. At Macquarie the seals forage at night in water only 10 to 20 m deep, when lanternfish rise toward the surface. Nothing about that diet depends on Antarctic krill.
That is the fundamental difference between the two subantarctic fur seals, and it explains why their fortunes have split. The Antarctic fur seal built its life around krill, warming has cut the krill supply, and the species was uplisted to Endangered in April 2026. The subantarctic fur seal eats mid water fish along the Subtropical Front and breeds north of the Antarctic Polar Front where conditions are milder, and it is currently listed as Least Concern with a stable trend. Two close relatives, sometimes on the same rock, heading in opposite directions, because what matters is not where an animal sleeps but what it eats.
The history is not gentler here, only older. Nineteenth century sealers hunted this species close to extinction and erased whole colonies, and small scale killing for bait and skins continued at Gough Island into the 1950s. At Macquarie, fur seals were wiped out within a decade of the island's discovery in 1810, with over 200,000 skins taken, and none bred there again for more than 130 years, until 1954. But the genetics tell a hopeful story: unlike the Antarctic fur seal, this species kept high genetic diversity through the bottleneck, in three distinct genetic groups, meaning it survived in several separate places at once rather than squeezing through one. Recolonising sites have been growing at 13 to 15 percent a year. One caution: Australia lists the species as Endangered under national law, effective 7 December 2016, because the Macquarie Island colony is small and confined.
