The smallest true seal in the world

Stretch a ringed seal out on the ice and you get an animal somewhere between three and five feet long, weighing about as much as a large dog. That makes it the smallest of all true seals. It takes its name from the pattern on its back: pale, irregular rings scattered across a dark grey coat, as though someone had pressed silver coins into wet paint.

What the ringed seal lacks in size it makes up for in reach. It is circumpolar, meaning it rings the entire top of the world, found across the Arctic Ocean from Alaska to Canada to Greenland to Siberia, and it is by a wide margin the most abundant seal in the Arctic. Where there is sea ice north of the tree line, there is usually a ringed seal somewhere beneath it.

Claws that open the ceiling

Every air-breathing animal that lives under sea ice faces the same problem, and each species has invented a different answer. The ringed seal's answer is on the ends of its front flippers. It has thick, strong, curved claws, and it uses them like ice picks.

A ringed seal will scrape and rasp its way upward through the ice, working the same spot over and over, and it can maintain a breathing hole through ice up to roughly two meters thick. Once the hole exists it has to be kept open all winter against constant refreezing, so the seal returns again and again to scour away the new ice. A single animal usually keeps several holes going at once across its territory. That one piece of anatomy is why ringed seals can occupy solid, thick, landfast ice that shuts almost every other seal out. They are not surviving at the edge of the ice. They live in the middle of it.

The whole species runs on one tool. A ringed seal's claws are the difference between having a home and having no access to air at all. Wear them down, injure a flipper, or lose a hole to a fast freeze, and the map of survivable ocean shrinks instantly.

The snow lair

In late winter, wind piles snow into deep drifts against pressure ridges in the sea ice. A pregnant ringed seal finds one of those drifts sitting directly above one of her breathing holes, and she digs upward into it, hollowing out a chamber in the snow.

This is the lair, and it is one of the most remarkable nurseries in the animal world. It has a floor of ice with a hole in it leading straight to the sea, walls of insulating snow, and a roof that hides everything inside from the wind and from view. The pup is born in that chamber, sheltered from Arctic gales that would kill it in the open, invisible from above. The mother comes and goes through the water below. For the first weeks of its life, a ringed seal's entire world is a small white room inside a snowdrift.

The polar bear connection

The lair is hidden, but it is not secret. Ringed seals are the primary prey of polar bears, the food that the largest land carnivore on Earth is actually built around, and a bear's nose is extraordinary. A polar bear can detect a pup buried under snow it cannot see through, then rear up and slam down with its full weight to crash through the roof. Arctic foxes raid lairs too, digging in after smaller pups.

The result is one of the tightest predator and prey links anywhere. Polar bear body condition, cub survival and hunting success all track the availability of ringed seals, and ringed seal pup survival tracks how well the snow hides them. Ask how polar bears are doing in a region and the honest first answer is another question: how are the ringed seals doing. The two species rise and fall together.

Built on ice, and on snow

Almost everything about a ringed seal assumes stable, snow-covered sea ice. It needs ice thick enough to hold a breathing hole, drifts deep enough to build a lair, and a spring that arrives late enough for the pup to be ready before the roof comes down. Break any one of those and the system fails. Warm spells and early melt can collapse lairs while pups are still tiny and thin-coated, exposing them to cold, to gulls, to foxes and to bears in a single afternoon. Rain on snow in late winter does the same thing faster.

Globally the species is listed as Least Concern, because there are still millions of ringed seals spread across the Arctic. That headline hides real trouble underneath it. Several subspecies are in far more fragile positions, including landlocked freshwater populations left behind by retreating glaciers. The Saimaa ringed seal in Finland and the Ladoga ringed seal in Russia live entirely in lakes and number only in the hundreds to low thousands. For those seals there is no wider Arctic to fall back on. There is one lake, and whatever winter it gets.
