One nostril, inflated into a bright red balloon. And the shortest childhood of any mammal alive.
The hooded seal is named for a piece of anatomy that only the adult males carry. Running along the top of the head is an enlarged nasal cavity, a stretchy sac of tissue that sits slack and wrinkled most of the time and looks like little more than a heavy brow. When the animal wants it to, that sac fills with air and swells into a black, two-lobed hood that sits above the snout and roughly doubles the apparent size of the head. A seal that looked ordinary a second earlier suddenly looks like something else entirely.
The display has two audiences. Males inflate the hood during courtship, when females are present on the ice and the competition for access to them is intense, and they inflate it at rival males as a threat, a way of settling a contest by size and nerve rather than by teeth. Hooded seals live in the North Atlantic and the Arctic, and they breed on drifting pack ice off eastern Canada, around Jan Mayen, and in the Greenland Sea. These are open, exposed, unstable places, and the animals that gather on them are not subtle about announcing themselves.
The hood is not the strangest thing this seal can do with its nose. Separately from the hood, and using different tissue, an adult male can push the elastic membrane of his nasal septum out through one nostril and inflate it into a bright pinkish-red balloon, roughly the size of a grapefruit, hanging off the side of his face. He can then shake it, wobble it, and pulse it from side to side while the rest of him stays perfectly still.
There is nothing quite like it anywhere else in the mammals. Plenty of animals have inflatable display structures, but the specific trick of everting an internal membrane through a single nostril and turning it into a wobbling red signal belongs to this species alone. Females do not have it and never develop it. Both the hood and the balloon are strictly male equipment, built for the brief and crowded weeks on the breeding ice, and the effect on a first-time observer is reliably the same: a moment of genuine disbelief that this is a real animal doing a real thing.
Hooded seals hold the record for the shortest lactation period of any mammal. On average a pup nurses for about four days, occasionally less, and then it is over. That is not a shortened version of a normal mammal childhood. It is a completely different strategy, compressed into less than a week.
It works because of the milk. Hooded seal milk is extraordinarily rich, running somewhere in the range of sixty to seventy percent fat, which is closer to the consistency of soft butter than to anything a person would recognize as milk. On that diet a pup roughly doubles its body weight in four days, going from around 24 kilograms at birth to around 47 kilograms at weaning, and almost all of that gain is blubber. Then the mother goes back into the water and does not return. The pup is alone on the ice with a thick new coat of fat and no further instruction.
The answer is under their feet. Hooded seals do not breed on land, and they do not breed on the solid, stable fast ice that some other seals use. They breed on drifting pack ice, loose floes moving with the wind and current in open ocean, which can crack, tip, collide, or simply melt out from under a family with no warning at all. A nursery that might not exist next week is not a place to run a long childhood.
So the whole system is built for speed. Get the pup born, transfer as much energy into it as physically possible in the shortest time the biology allows, and get both animals off the ice before the ice becomes the problem. Pups are called bluebacks for the beautiful blue-grey coats they wear in their first year, dark on the back and pale below, and after weaning they are left to fend for themselves almost immediately. They lie on the floe living off their own fat, then take to the water and work out swimming and hunting largely on their own. It is a brutal-sounding arrangement, and it is also one of the most efficient parental strategies in the animal kingdom.
The IUCN lists the hooded seal as Vulnerable. Northeast Atlantic populations, the ones that breed around Jan Mayen and in the Greenland Sea, declined severely over the twentieth century and have not recovered to anything like their former numbers. Commercial hunting pressure was historically heavy, targeting both adults and the bluebacks for their pelts, and while that pressure has been sharply reduced, the population response has been slow and incomplete. Like every ice-breeding seal, the species also depends on sea ice arriving in the right place, at the right time, and lasting long enough for pups to be born and weaned on it. Those conditions are changing.
They are also famous wanderers. Hooded seals turn up thousands of miles outside their normal range with a regularity that biologists still find puzzling: individuals have been recorded in Portugal, in the Caribbean, and along coastlines where a North Atlantic ice seal has no business being. Some of these animals are young, some are underweight, and most do not survive the detour. Whether the wandering is navigational error, exploration, or a symptom of something going wrong at home, it means that the species most people will never see in the Arctic occasionally shows up, alone and far from the ice, on a warm beach where nobody expected it.
