Living on the equator sounds like the easy option for a seal until you look at the numbers. The Galápagos sit in warm tropical water, and warm water is poor water. It holds fewer nutrients and supports far less life than the cold upwelling seas where every other fur seal lives. The archipelago works at all only because the cold Cromwell Current wells up against the western islands, which is exactly where the fur seals are, with roughly 95 percent of them on Fernandina.
Being small is the adaptation. A smaller body needs less energy every day, so where food is thin and unpredictable, small animals survive stretches that would kill large ones. Males run 1.5 to 1.6 m and 60 to 68 kg. Females are 1.1 to 1.3 m and average about 27 kg. Researchers list three linked adaptations that let Galápagos pinnipeds cope: reduced body size, reduced energy requirements, and a very long nursing period.
The same logic flattens the usual gap between the sexes. In most fur seals a bull is three or four times the weight of a female, because a huge male can hold a beach and monopolise mating. Here males are only about 2.0 to 2.3 times heavier, because holding a territory means fasting, and a big body burns through reserves faster. The IUCN cautions that very few adult males have ever been measured, so those male figures rest on a small sample.
These seals feed almost exclusively at night, in open water 10 to 70 km off Fernandina. A typical foraging dive is 26 to 32 m and lasts under two minutes. The deepest dive ever recorded for the species is 115 m, and the longest is 5.7 minutes.
The hunting is tied to the moon. Trips run longer at new moon, and juveniles are affected more strongly than adults. On dark nights the prey, small squid and lanternfish, rise closest to the surface and are easiest to catch, so the seals work harder and stay out longer when the moon is down. Female foraging trips average just 1.5 days in the cool season, the shortest of any fur seal, stretching to about four days in the warm season.
The large eyes are part of the same package. The Galapagos Conservation Trust notes they do two jobs: finding prey in the dark, and watching for sharks.
Fur seals evolved their double layer coat for cold water: one stiff guard hair over 35 to 40 fine underfur hairs, holding a permanent film of air against the skin. On the equator that coat becomes a problem rather than a solution. A study by Limberger and colleagues found that pups hold a core temperature of 37.7 degrees Celsius from their first day of life, and that for an animal lying in the sun, the effective environmental temperature exceeds its own body temperature for six to nine hours a day. In the shade it stays below.
So the animals live by shade. Colonies sit on rocky coasts with big boulders, ledges, caves and crevices, and pups withdraw into shadow and cut their activity to almost nothing through the hot hours, wetting themselves in tide pools when they can. Galápagos fur seals spend as much as 30 percent of their time on land, far more than most fur seals, which makes shade a limiting resource rather than a comfort. If you are picturing this species, the accurate scene is not a seal basking on an open beach. It is a seal wedged into a shadow under a lava overhang, waiting out the middle of the day.
Getting into that shadow takes eared seal hardware. The hind flippers rotate forward under the body, so these seals walk and climb over broken lava on all fours rather than dragging themselves. The short, broad fore flippers do the swimming out at sea and carry the weight on land. And the long, prominent ear flaps, tan at the base like the stubby muzzle, are the family badge: no true seal has them.
El Niño reverses the conditions the Galápagos depend on. Warm water piles up in the eastern Pacific, the upwelling shuts down, and the food chain collapses from the bottom.
The 1982 to 1983 event is documented in detail by Trillmich and Limberger. Almost all pups died. Roughly 30 percent of adult females and non territorial males died. And close to 100 percent of large territorial males died, because a bull defending a territory does not feed, so when the prey vanishes the strategy that normally wins becomes fatal. The four youngest year classes were effectively wiped out. Another severe event followed in 1997 to 1998, and a further one in 2015 produced a 38 percent drop concentrated in the western rookeries.
The current numbers are contested. The IUCN assessment published in 2015 lists 10,000 mature individuals out of roughly 15,000 total, with a decreasing trend and a reported decline of 77 to 80 percent between 1977/78 and 2001. A 2022 census by RiofrĂo-Lazo and Páez-Rosas counted 2,834 animals directly and estimated a total of 8,815 to 12,005, arguing that abundance has been broadly stable since 2001 while remaining more than 60 percent below 1978 levels. Those authors explicitly recommend keeping the Endangered listing.
A Galápagos fur seal pup nurses for 12 to 36 months, and the IUCN records exceptional cases of offspring still nursing at four or five years old. Over that time a mother visits her pup roughly 300 separate times, coming ashore for half a day to just over a day between foraging trips. Females usually produce a pup every year but successfully raise one only every other year. That is the lowest reproductive rate reported in any seal.
The schedule creates harsh arithmetic. If a mother gives birth while her previous pup is still nursing, the newborn is competing with a much larger sibling for the same milk. The IUCN states that pups born before an older sibling is weaned rarely survive, most starving because the older pup outcompetes them and a few killed directly by it. Work by Trillmich and Wolf reports that up to 23 percent of pups are born into this situation, that in good years second pup mortality is as low as 5 percent, and that in poor years around 80 percent of them die within a month. About 75 percent of mothers intervene, often aggressively, biting or lifting the older offspring away.
It reads as cruelty and it is not. It is what happens when the food supply is so unreliable that raising one pup takes three years, while the biology that schedules births has not caught up.
