The seal with no calendar

Nearly every seal in the world breeds once a year, on a schedule tied to the seasons. Australian sea lions do not. They pup roughly every 17 to 18 months, which means the breeding season drifts steadily around the calendar, arriving in summer, then autumn, then winter.

It gets stranger. The breeding season itself is long, running four to nine months at a single colony, and it is out of step between colonies. One island can be in the middle of pupping while an island a short boat ride away is not breeding at all. Surveys in Western Australia between 2011 and 2014 found some colonies had shifted their timing by up to six months compared with the 1990s. At many sites, researchers can only predict the next season or two with any confidence.

Nobody knows why. The IUCN assessment says so directly: the evolutionary reasons for this reproductive strategy remain unexplained. That is worth sitting with. It is not a gap you can fill by looking it up. It is an open question in marine biology, lying in plain sight on Australian beaches. The pregnancy that goes with it is a record too: after mating, the fertilised egg pauses for four to six months before implanting, then the active pregnancy runs up to about 14 months, the longest gestation of any pinniped.

Mothers who never move house

Female Australian sea lions breed only at the beach where they were born. Not usually. Only. Australia's conservation advice states there is little or no movement of females between breeding colonies, even between colonies separated by short distances.

The genetic evidence is stark. Maternally inherited DNA is so sharply divided between colonies that each breeding site effectively functions as its own separate population. That isolation is almost certainly what keeps the breeding seasons out of step, because with no females moving between colonies there is nothing to synchronise them.

The consequence is written plainly into the conservation advice: once a colony is lost, it is unlikely to re-establish, because of that female site fidelity. Losing a colony is permanent on any timescale that matters. And most colonies are tiny. Pupping has been recorded at about 80 sites, average pup production per site is about 40, roughly 70 percent of sites produce fewer than 30 pups a season, and only about five produce more than 100. The largest, Dangerous Reef, had an estimated 485 pups in the 2014 to 2015 census. Males are different, and bachelors from islands near Perth have been tracked migrating up to 280 km. But males do not found colonies. Females do, and they do not go.

A hidden cost of crowding. Every pup at two major South Australian breeding colonies is infected with a blood feeding hookworm called Uncinaria sanguinis. Not most of them. All of them. Ivermectin trials at Dangerous Reef in 2011, 2013 and 2017 cleared the infection completely, improved growth and blood health, and caused no adverse effects.

The white cap, and what a bull is built from

Adult males are dark blackish or rich chocolate brown, and over that dark body they carry a blonde to creamy white cap that starts on the top of the head between the ears and runs back over the crown and nape, fading out at the shoulders. It is why the species is sometimes called the white capped sea lion, and it identifies a bull at a glance. Adult females look like a different animal altogether: silvery ash grey above, grading to yellow and cream on the throat, chest and belly.

Underneath the colour, this is a textbook eared seal. The ear flaps are small tightly rolled cones you can see from the side, where a true seal has only a hole. The front flippers are large and broad, proportionally big for the body, and they do the swimming, rowing downward and backward while a true seal instead sweeps its rear half from side to side. The hind flippers rotate forward under the hips so the animal walks on all four limbs with its chest up, which is how a sea lion crosses a beach and climbs a rock while a true seal is still humping along on its belly.

The size gap is the other family trait. Males run 1.8 to 2.5 m and 180 to 250 kg, females 1.3 to 1.8 m and 61 to 105 kg, so a bull is about 1.25 times longer and 2.5 to 3.5 times heavier. He carries a heavy dome crowned forehead with the white cap sitting on it like a highlight, and a broad neck that blends straight into the shoulders with no visible waist. IUCN adds a caution worth passing on: very little information on adult male sizes is available, and some published values may be overestimates.

Working the seafloor

Australian sea lions are benthic foragers, meaning they hunt on the bottom rather than in open water. They stay on the continental shelf, and their diving is a study in efficiency: they minimise the time spent going down and coming back up in order to maximise time actually on the seabed, and they often transit by swimming along the bottom rather than through the water column.

Individual dives rarely exceed eight minutes, which allows ten or eleven dives an hour, and they dive almost continuously while at sea. Juveniles rarely go deeper than about 90 m, adult females about 130 m and adult males about 150 m, with the deepest recorded dive by an adult male around 250 m. Foraging trips are short by sea lion standards, averaging one to two and a half days.

The menu reflects the habitat: octopus, squid and cuttlefish, leatherjackets, wrasse, flatheads, perch, cods, mullets, whiting, rock ling, stingaree and fiddler ray, plus crabs, prawns and rock lobster, with penguins, sharks, rays and eels recorded too. Their own main predator is the white shark.

Nets, closures and a very long road back

Sealing ended in Australia in 1949. Australian fur seals and long nosed fur seals have grown strongly since the early 1990s. Australian sea lions never recovered. A 2021 study estimated 2,739 pups species wide across 80 breeding sites, with 82 percent of them in South Australia, and found pup numbers falling an average of 2 percent a year and a total reduction of about 64 percent over three generations, which for this species is about 42 years.

The main modern threat has been bycatch in demersal gillnets, where animals drown or escape and die later of their injuries. Between 2010 and 2012 the Australian Fisheries Management Authority closed most waters within 4 to 10 nautical miles of every South Australian colony to shark gillnetting, set bycatch trigger limits forcing an 18 month extended closure if exceeded, and required 100 percent observer coverage, largely through electronic monitoring. Recorded mortalities in Commonwealth fisheries fell to fewer than four per breeding cycle, 21 animals across the whole decade from 2010 to 2019. Sea lion excluder devices fitted to rock lobster pots have largely stopped pups and juveniles drowning inside them.

Whether it is enough is not yet known. The conservation advice cautions that the measures have not been in place long enough to show an observable effect, and that a 17 to 18 month breeding cycle makes recovery inherently slow. Adult males are themselves a major cause of pup death, identified in 31.6 percent of 128 dead pups examined across three breeding seasons at Seal Bay, with no cause determined at all in 49 percent of cases. Set that against the arithmetic: a female produces one pup every 17 to 18 months at best, then invests 15 to 18 months of nursing in it. Every pup lost is an enormous amount of effort gone. The Australian sea lion, known as Bulgura, is an important totem for the Wirangu people, traditional custodians of the Chain of Bays region in South Australia.
